When Angela Wright acquired Bingham Cyclery from the previous owners in 2015, it was the culmination of her career. Angela received her MBA from the University of Utah, had already owned a few businesses, and had been biking all her life. Her first job was at a bike shop, and she had come full circle.
Bingham Cyclery had a long history as a family-owned business, opened in 1962. Angela knew the shop needed a change. The shop was well-established but it had lost touch with the community. Angela is passionate about encouraging women to ride bikes, and is involved in several organizations doing that work. She inherited some cycling teams when she bought the shop, and has continued growing those teams and starting new cycling clubs specifically geared towards women.
Angela finds satisfaction in getting people on bikes and seeing them smile. Biking is her happy place and she loves sharing it. “Bikes make the world a better place,” she says, “and there’s just no arguing that fact.”
Between her business degree and previous management and operations experience, Angela was well-prepared to become a business owner. She didn’t learn how to write a business plan in school, so she worked hard and compiled one that was 90 pages long. When she looked for resources, she visited the local Small Business Development Center (SBDC). They told her to cut her business plan way down to 10 pages to present to banks. She wishes she’d had more financial resources earlier on in the process.
Angela’s advice for women aspiring to business ownership:
Start small. If you’re selling your product too fast, that’s a good problem to have. Don’t get in over your head or go too fast.
