Not Your Average Accountant
Kaylee Spinhirn is a yogi, accountant, money coach, and nomad. She is taking her second cross-country road trip with her puppy (check out her adventures on Instagram!) while simultaneously helping entrepreneurs strengthen their relationship with money, increase business profits, and keep more of the money they make. She takes the person behind the numbers and leverages their business to create a life of wealth and freedom. She offers e-courses, planners, bookkeeping services, and coaching. When she isn’t working, you can find her at a local coffee shop or on top of a mountain.
Kaylee started her own business because she wanted to travel the world. She explained that there is not a lot of freedom to do this within the corporate world of accounting, “The accounting industry is very stuffy, cubicle and dry and I wanted to add a lot more personality and flare to the industry.” These two things combined gave her the push and drive she needed to create her own business.
The biggest obstacle she had to face was all of her weaknesses. As she explains it: “When you have a typical nine to five you can leave work at work at the end of the day, but when you have your own business your personal and business life meld together.” There is no longer a separate personal life away from work. She has built a lifestyle business so she had to figure out how to fit her life into that.
Don’t Go It Alone
In the beginning, she wishes she had hired more people. She learned the hard way that “trying to do everything yourself is really painful.” Kaylee bootstrapped her business (started her business without external capital) and looking back on it now she realizes that she should have set money aside specifically for things she doesn’t do well. In her case, this would have been for marketing and a website designer. Kaylee explained, “Even though these things can be done free, that’s not the point-people are hiring you for your talents and you want to be available and have the energy to give your talents and gifts.”
Her business is extremely unusual in that she does not have a “home office,” she travels the world and works from her laptop. Currently, she is traveling from Airbnb to Airbnb, state by state in the United States. She stays in each state for about a month so she can hike and see national parks with her dog. Her business is also unique in the fact she works with intuitives, creators and healers. Kaylee works with them not only on accounting skills, but she also coaches them on money. She helps them strengthen their relationship with money so they can build more wealth.
Embrace Your Uniqueness
In the corporate world of accounting you usually only see your accountant a couple of times a year, and they don’t always have time for questions. Kaylee works with her clients one-on-one and helps them avoid some of the pitfalls of business that oftentimes can lead to business failure, like making a tax mistake, that could have been avoided if they just had some help sooner. She above all else wants to help her clients, “break the cycle of broke.”
Some valuable advice she would give to women looking to start a business is: “Women need to know, believe and trust that they can get paid for their talents.” She says women should be ready to face their own weaknesses. For example, if you are a perfectionist or a control freak, you need to learn to let those things go. You can build unique businesses and you don’t have to do things the same way everyone else does. You can inject your personality into your business and create your own uniqueness.
